The Shop Top Residence explores the integration of contemporary living within an evolving urban streetscape — balancing residential amenity, commercial activation, and contextual sensitivity within a compact inner-city site.
Positioned above a ground-floor retail tenancy, the project reinterprets the traditional shop-top typology through a layered architectural response that engages with both the historic character of the street and the changing nature of urban living. The façade composition reflects this dialogue between old and new — retaining the vertical proportions and rhythm of neighbouring heritage buildings while introducing a refined contemporary language through simplified detailing, material restraint, and carefully proportioned openings.
The development is defined by its contrast in architectural expression. A minimalist lower podium anchors the commercial frontage at street level, while the upper residential form adopts a softer and more sculptural presence. Above, a rooftop terrace is framed by classical-inspired parapet detailing and integrated landscaping, creating a private outdoor retreat elevated above the activity of the street below.
Internally, the residence was designed to maximise natural light, openness, and spatial efficiency within a constrained urban footprint. Open-plan living spaces connect directly to outdoor terraces, encouraging natural ventilation and extending the experience of the interior beyond the building envelope. Large openings and carefully positioned glazing establish a strong relationship between the residence and the surrounding streetscape while maintaining privacy for occupants.
The project draws inspiration from traditional European shop-top housing typologies, where commercial and residential uses coexist within a compact urban fabric. This mixed-use approach contributes to a more active and walkable streetscape while supporting increased residential density within established centres. Contemporary shop-top developments are increasingly recognised for their ability to revitalise suburban high streets by introducing permanent residential occupation above underutilised commercial premises.
Materiality plays a central role in defining the architectural character of the proposal. A restrained palette of textured masonry, muted render, and lightweight metal cladding creates distinction between old and new interventions while maintaining cohesion across the façade composition. The rooftop planting softens the upper form and introduces greenery into the urban environment, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on livability and connection to outdoor space.
Designed as a compact mixed-use development, the Shop Top Residence investigates how contemporary residential architecture can coexist with existing urban character while contributing to a more vibrant, walkable, and layered streetscape.
